Larry McCready participated in track and field at UNI from 1966-69. He was an all-around athlete, running the hurdles, several relays and competing in the high jump and long jump, but his area of excellence was the hurdles.
The Dubuque, Iowa, native's list of accomplishments is impressive, indeed. In his first year on the varsity squad in 1967, McCready broke four meet records, set a school record in the 120-yard high hurdles and set a stadium record at the NCAA Track Championships in Ogden, Utah. He also collected four conference titles in the indoor 60-yard high hurdles, the indoor 60-yard low hurdles, the outdoor 120-yard high hurdles and the high jump. He set the UNI standard for points scored in a season with 275.
McCready continued his dominance of the hurdles in 1968, again winning the 60 indoor highs and the 60 lows, and repeated as well in the 120 highs. He made All-America status that year, placing second in the 120 highs. In 1969, McCready captured conference titles in the indoor 60 highs and lows and in the outdoor 120-yard high hurdles. He repeated his All-American performance of the previous year, again placing second. At the NCAA University Division Nationals, he finished sixth overall.
He was also the Drake Relays champion in the 120 highs and was named UNI Athlete of the Year for the 1968-69 season. Over his career he totaled 804 individual points. In addition, McCready was ranked in the Top 10 in the world in the summer of 1969 by Track and Field News. While a Panther, he led UNI to six conference titles - three indoor and three outdoor.Â
