IRVING, Tex. --- UNI's Nick Fox has been named the Big 12 Conference's Wrestler of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. The honor marks the first time he has earned the conference's weekly award in his career.
Fox's selection comes after the Panther redshirt sophomore and 184 pounder picked up a pair of top-ten ranked victories over the weekend in Northern Iowa's road duals at No. 5 Oklahoma State and No. 21 Oklahoma. Against the Cowboys, Fox scored a 3-1 sudden victory win over eighth-ranked Zack Ryder, scoring the winning reversal in a tied match with 11 seconds remaining in overtime from the bottom position. Taking on tenth-ranked Brian Soldano (Oklahoma), Fox jumped out to a 7-0 lead with a takedown and four nearfall points before Soldano was forced to injury default.
Fox, an Osage, Iowa native, sits at 7-1 on the season with seven consecutive victories.
Other nominees for Big 12 Wrestler of the Week included Tucker Owens (Air Force), Gabe Shumm (Cal Baptist), Cam Steed (Missouri), Davin Wasley (North Dakota State), Sergio Vega (Oklahoma State), Carter Shubert (Oklahoma), Brock Fettig (South Dakota State), Dominick Serrano (Northern Colorado) and Luke Willochell (Wyoming).
The Panthers return to action on Sunday, Feb. 8 when they visit South Dakota State in Big 12 dual action. Competition is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. CT at First Bank & Trust Arena in Brookings with live coverage available on Midco Sports Plus.
