UNI softball opens the 2025 season inside the UNI-Dome

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The 52nd season of UNI softball gets underway on Friday afternoon in the annual Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic. This year's event features five teams and 12 games across three days of action. As a part of the tournament, the Panthers will take on the Fighting Hawks of North Dakota and the Mavericks of Omaha on opening day.
UNI opens the season Friday with a matchup against North Dakota, a team that the Panthers have clashed with on seven previous occasions, the last coming in 2012. UNI holds a 5-2 lead in the all-time series. That matchup is followed by a game against Omaha. The Panthers and the Mavericks meet for the 26th time after Omaha took the lone matchup last season in the 2024 Doc Halverson Classic. UNI holds a 15-10 advantage in the all-time series.
The Panthers will face former Valley foe Loyola-Chicago to open play on Saturday, meeting the Ramblers for the first time since 2022. The Panthers hold a 24-6 lead in the all-time series heading into the 31st matchup of these two programs.
UNI closes out the Doc Halverson Classic with matchups against North Dakota on Saturday and Omaha on Sunday.
The Panthers were tabbed at no. 3 on the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) preseason poll earlier in the week. Southern Illinois was named the preseason favorite while Belmont occupied the second spot. Kate Lappe was named to the MVC Preseason All-MVC Team at third base. UNI enters the 2025 campaign with nine new faces including seven freshmen and two junior transfers.
