
Kayba Laube breaks UNI’s three-point record in a victory over Southern Illinois

UNI women’s basketball senior guard Kayba Laube became UNI’s all-time leading three-point shooter in an 87-51 victory.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- UNI women's basketball hosted the Southern Illinois Salukis on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers broke the matchup open in the second quarter and never looked back as all five starters finished in double-figures in an 87-51 victory over the Salukis.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers came out with a three-pointer before five points from Shateah Wetering tied the game at eight early in the first quarter. A nine-point run from UNI saw four points from Ryley Goebel to push the Panthers out front by a score of 17-8. SIU held a 5-2 advantage down the back half of the first quarter with a score of 19-13 in favor of UNI. Shateah Wetering led all scorers in the first quarter with seven points.
A 9-2 run for UNI opened the second quarter inside the McLeod Center. Back-and-forth buckets the rest of the second quarter saw UNI hold a 15-point lead at 39-24 heading into the halftime break. Wetering continued to lead the Panther scoring effort with 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the floor in the first half. The Panthers shot 50% (15-for-30) from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play.
UNI opened the second half on a 12-point run on a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor to take a 27-point lead at 51-24. A 13-10 advantage for the Panthers to close out the third quarter gave UNI a 30-point lead at 64-34 to open the final frame. In the fourth, the Panthers put up 23 points, including six from freshman Kaylynn Janes, to finish the contest with a 36-point victory and a final score of 87-51.
Kayba Laube led all scorers with 17 points. The senior guard was 5-for-7 from beyond the arc and 6-for-9 from the floor. She added seven boards to her total. Maya McDermott (14), Shateah Wetering (13), Emerson Green (12), and Ryley Goebel (10) were the other Panther scorers in double figures. Goebel finished with six rebounds and three blocks while Elise Jaeger finished with seven rebounds.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
- UNI improves to 14-13 on the season, 8-7 in MVC play, and 51-35 all-time against the Salukis with the 87-51 victory inside the McLeod Center.
- Kayba Laube broke the UNI all-time three-point record set by Jacqui Kalin (2007-13). Her fifth three-pointer of the game gave her 266 career threes and eclipsed Kalin's 265-mark.
- The Panthers' 36-point victory is UNI's largest Division I victory of the season and its largest victory over a Division I opponent since a 46-point victory at Bradley last season.
- UNI continued its 539-game three-pointer streak with 10 triples against Southern Illinois. This is UNI's eighth double-figure three-point game of the season.
- Kaylynn Janes recorded a career-high six points in the contest.
