Panther softball splits second day of the Furman Classic

UNI softball finished Furman Classic day two with a loss to Austin Peay and a win over Holy Cross.
GREENVILLE, S.C. — UNI softball continued Furman Classic action on Saturday with matchups against Austin Peay and Holy Cross. The Panther offense struggled in a 3-1 loss to Austin Peay, but bounced back in an 8-0 victory over Holy Cross.
GAME ONE | AUSTIN PEAY 3, UNI 1
The Panthers and the Governors battled back-and-forth with an even 0-0 matchup through four full innings of play. In the top of the fifth, Austin Peay got things rolling with a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead. The Panthers cut the Governor lead to one with a Kylee Sanders double which drove in Katy Olive. That would be the lone Panther run of the game while Austin Peay tacked on another in the top of the seventh to take home a 3-1 victory.
Sanders, Addison McElrath, and Katelyn Callahan were the lone Panthers to record a hit against the Governors. Anna Wischnowski finished with two strikeouts in her fourth complete game of the season.
GAME TWO | UNI 8, Holy Cross 0
The Panthers opened action against Holy Cross in the top of the second inning with a single from Ella Smithson which scored Katy Olive. Katelyn Callahan also crossed the plate for UNI later that inning on a bunt from Paige Peterson.
The Cats continued their dominant performance in the top of the third inning with a two-run homerun from Kate Lappe, her second of the Classic, which scored Makenna Kuper who ran for Drew Hinrichs to give UNI a 4-0 lead. A delayed double steal from Katelyn Callahan scored Katy Olive. Callahan crossed the plate later that inning on a throw down. UNI held a 6-0 after three innings of play.
The Panthers tacked two more on in the top of the fourth on a single from Kate Lappe to score Brynlee Slockett, her first collegiate run, before Adalyn Reynolds was driven in on a single from Katy Olive. The Panthers ended day two with an 8-0 final against Holy Cross.
Katy Olive was 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and an RBI. Kate Lappe batted in three runs with two hits in three at-bats with a homerun. In the circle, Morgan Verts got her second career win after three innings pitched in relief. Kara Maiers finished with three strikeouts in her two innings after starting. The 8-0 victory is the Panthers' second shutout of the season.

The Panthers wrap up the Furman Classic on Sunday, Feb. 23 with a matchup against host Furman. The Panthers and the Paladins clash at 1 p.m. CT with the matchup available to stream on ESPN+.
