UNI women’s basketball: Panthers pick up sixth win of the season at Valparaiso

UNI Panther women’s basketball stays perfect in Valley play after an 86-52 victory over the Beacons.
VALPARAISO, Ind. --- UNI women's basketball jumped back into MVC play with a road trip to Indiana to take on the Valparaiso Beacons. The Panthers got hot from three and stayed hot, knocking down 15 three-pointers in an 86-52 rout of Valparaiso, UNI's ninth-straight victory over the Beacons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beacons opened the game with the first five points before the Panthers mounted a 14-2 run to take a 14-7 lead just past the first-quarter media timeout. Over the rest of the frame, the teams battled back and forth, but the Panthers held a 13-10 advantage to lead the matchup 27-17 after the first quarter.
The second quarter saw UNI score 20 points with three three-pointers and a 47.1% field goal percentage. Twedt scored seven on the quarter's points while Goebel tallied six and Janes knocked down a triple and a layup for five points in the frame.
At halftime, Kaylynn Janes led the Panthers with 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the floor and 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. Jenna Twedt scored 13 points in the first half while Ryley Goebel recorded a double-double in the half with 10 points and 10 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass. Bri Robinson had five assists at the break.
The Panthers continued to dominate out of the break as they went on a 13-7 run to open the second half. The run saw three triples off the hands of Taryn Wharton, Elise Jaeger, and Jenna Twedt. The Panthers and the Beacons went back and forth down the back half of the third quarter with UNI holding a one-point edge to close out the frame 10-9 and hold a 70-46 lead into the final 10 minutes.
The fourth quarter was low-scoring, but the Panthers still came out on top of the frame with a 16-6 advantage over the final 10 minutes of play. Bri Robinson finished with six points on a perfect 2-for-2 from the floor including a three-pointer and a trip to the free-throw line to convert on the and-one. The Panthers took home an 86-52 victory to improve to 2-0 in MVC play.
Jenna Twedt led UNI with 18 points including five three-pointers. Twedt added four steals to her stat line. Kaylynn Janes, Taryn Wharton, Ryley Goebel, and Bri Robinson were all in double figures with 16, 12, 11, and 10 points respectively. Goebel added 13 boards to her line along with three steals while Robinson dished out seven assists.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
- UNI improved to 6-6 on the season including 2-0 in MVC play with its ninth-straight victory over Valparaiso. The Panthers are now 16-6 all-time against the Beacons.
- Ryley Goebel finished with three steals and passed Kris Huffman (1985-89) for seventh on UNI's all-time steals list.
- Goebel finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds, her fourth double-double of the season and the fifth of her career.
- The Panthers continued an active program-record 558-game three-pointer streak with 15 triples against the Beacons.
- Abby Tuttle finished with a career-high seven rebounds.
- Mya Nicholson tied a career-high with two assists.
- Jenna Twedt knocked down a career-high six field goals and stole a career-high four passes. She tied a career-high with five three-pointers.
- Bri Robinson came up with a career-high seven boards and dished out a career-high seven assists.
- Maren Schmotzer finished with a career-high four points and two free throws and tied a career-high with one field goal and two blocks.
- Lauren Walker tied career-highs with two rebounds and one steal.
- Kaylynn Janes finished with a career-high 16 points, six field goals, four three-pointers, and four rebounds and tied a career-high with an assist.
UP NEXT
The Panthers stay on the road and head to UIC to take on the Flames on Wednesday, December 31. Tipoff on New Year's Eve is scheduled for noon and will be streamed on ESPN+ and the Panther Sports Radio Network.
