UNI women’s basketball: Panthers drop contest to No. 10 Cyclones in Ames

UNI women’s basketball falls in in-state rivalry to No. 10 Iowa State.
AMES, Iowa --- UNI women's basketball traveled to Ames, Iowa to take on the No. 10-ranked Iowa State Cyclones on Sunday evening. The Cyclones flexed their offensive efficiency and shot 44.8% from the field and 41.4% from deep to hand the Panthers an 81-53 loss inside Hilton Coliseum.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers were the first on the board with back-to-back buckets from Ryley Goebel and Jenna Twedt to take a 4-0 lead. Goebel netted the next six Panther points to give UNI 10 to the Cyclones six after a pair of three-pointers. Iowa State finished the first quarter on a 14-5 run to lead by five at 20-15 heading into the second quarter.
The Panthers struck first in the second quarter on a deep ball from Mya Nicholson. A 13-2 run from the Cyclones put Iowa State up 13 points at 33-20. Bri Robinson scored UNI's next six points before Iowa State closed the first half on an 11-point run to hold a 48-26 advantage heading into the halftime break. At the break, Ryley Goebel led the Panthers with eight points. Elise Jaeger brought in six boards and dished out three assists in the first half.
Iowa State led the third quarter 19-12 before UNI edged out the Cyclones in the final frame 15-14. A late seven-point run for the Panthers was the difference maker in the fourth quarter. The run saw buckets from Kaylynn Janes and Lauren Walker as well as a three-pointer from Abby Tuttle. Iowa State outlasted the Panthers and took home an 81-53 victory after all 40 minutes were played.
Abby Tuttle led UNI with 13 points. She added five assists and three rebounds off the bench. Rykley Goebel finished with 10 points and five boards while Elise Jaeger led the game with 12 rebounds.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
- UNI falls to 4-6 on the season after the loss at Iowa State.
- UNI continued an active program-record 556-game three-pointer streak with four triples against Iowa State.
- Abby Tuttle finished with career-highs of 13 points, four field goals, two three-pointers, and three free throws and tied career-highs with three rebounds and one steal.
