Trey Campbell garners MVC Player of the Week honors

ST. LOUIS --- UNI senior guard Trey Campbell has been named the Missouri Valley Conference's (MVC) Player of the Week for men's basketball, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
This is the first weekly conference honor for Campbell and the Panthers this season, and is the second MVC Player of the Week nod for Campbell in his career.
The selection comes for the Cedar Falls native after Campbell led the Panthers with 17 points per game on the week, including a season-high 19 points in an overtime road win at reigning NIT runner-up UC Irvine. He made a season-high seven baskets at UC Irvine, including the game-tying layup and free throw that helped Northern Iowa to a one-point overtime victory and UNI's first 5-0 start in six years. He recorded a career-high six steals against Northern Illinois.
Campbell leads UNI with 14.4 points per game overall through five games this season, as well as 3.8 assists a game and 14 total steals, shooting 38.3% from the field and 84.2% at the free throw line. He is also just 19 points away from becoming the latest Panther to reach 1,000 career points.
In addition to Campbell, UIC's Mekhi Lowery was named the MVC's Newcomer of the Week, while Valparaiso's Rakim Chaney earned MVC Freshman of the Week honors.
Campbell and the Panthers return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they take on Loyola-Chicago at 3 p.m. CT in the opening game of the Acrisure Holiday Invitational in Palm Springs, California. UNI will then play either San Jose State or Tulsa on Wednesday afternoon at either 1 or 3:30 p.m. CT.
Both games of the Acrisure Holiday Invitational can be heard on the Panther Sports Radio Network (93.5 The Mix), with live television coverage of Wednesday's game on CBS Sports Network.
