UNI, which is off to its first 3-0 start to a season since the 2019-20 campaign, has dominated the series with the Huskies in recent years, winning the last six matchups including an impressive 101-57 victory last December in Cedar Falls. The Panthers lead the all-time series against Northern Illinois, 17-8.
In their last outing, the Panthers posted five players in double-digit scoring figures in 70-54 showing against the Furman Paladins last Friday night. Northern Iowa's defense held Furman to 13% shooting from three-point range and under 40% shooting overall for the game with 13 forced turnovers. Trey Campbell led the way with 18 points, with Ben Schwieger and Leon Bond III scoring 14 points each, Tristan Smith 13 points and Will Hornseth 11 points.
Through three games, the Panther defense has forced 50 opposing turnovers (16.6 per game), third-most in the MVC. UNI has also posted the league's best scoring defense early with just 56.3 points allowed per game, the eighth-best mark in all of Division I. The Panthers also boast the nation's seventh-best three-point percentage defense (.205).
Campbell enters Tuesday's contest with the Huskies expected to start in his 100th career game and 67th consecutive start, while also sitting 53 points shy of becoming the latest member of the program's 1,000 career point club.
SCOUTING NORTHERN ILLINOIS
The Huskies have split their first four games to the season, including a 117-62 win over Division III Benedictine (IL) last Thursday. Northern Illinois' other win this season came in a 102-82 home victory over Louisiana-Monroe on the opening night.
Led by fifth year head coach Rashon Bruno, NIU was picked last out of 13 programs in the Mid-American Conference's (MAC) preseason poll entering their final season in the league before joining the Horizon League next year for all sports minus football.
Jao Ituka leads the Huskies with 12 points per game, along with 11.5 points per contest from Daemar Kelly, as well as 11.5 points and a team-high 5.5 rebounds from Makhai Valentine.
