Due to the on-going Iowa High School Athletic Association's (IHSAA) state football playoffs in the UNI-Dome fans are encouraged to arrive at the McLeod Center early. The McLeod Center parking lot will be held for those with specific passes, while all UNI-Dome lots will be open for attendees of both events.
Friday will be only the second all-time meeting between the Panthers and Paladins, who last met in Cedar Falls in December of 2003 with Furman emerging with a nine-point victory, 64-55. The game will also see the return of former Panther Klint Carlson (2014-18), a member of the Furman coaching staff and two-time Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Tournament champion who helped UNI reach the NCAA Tournament in 2015 and 2016.
Northern Iowa returns to action after scoring a 65-58 home win over South Dakota State on Sunday. Despite being outrebounded by the Jackrabbits by 16, Tristan Smith recorded a season-high 16 points in the winning effort as Leon Bond III and Will Hornseth both contributed with double-digit scoring performances.
Through two games, the Panther defense has forced 37 opposing turnovers (18.5 per game), second-most in the MVC behind Murray State (40 total, 20 per game). UNI has also posted the league's best scoring defense early with just 57.5 points allowed per game, surrendering just 115 total points.. The Panthers also boast the MVC's third-best three-point percentage defense (.256).
Campbell enters Friday's contest with the Paladins expected to play in his 99th career game and 66th consecutive start, while also sitting 71 points shy of becoming the latest member of the program's 1,000 career point club.
UNI is also ranked eighth in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major top-25 rankings, one of eight MVC schools to be either ranked or receiving votes.
SCOUTING FURMAN
The Paladins visit Cedar Falls after earning their first win of the year at home against NAIA Columbia International. Furman opened the year with losses to High Point at the Field of 68 Opening Day Marathon and at home to Troy.
Led by ninth year head coach Bob Richey, the Paladins were picked second in the Southern Conference's preseason poll, narrowly finishing behind Chattanooga. Forward Cooper Bowser and guard Tom House were both named preseason all-conference.
Charles Johnson has been a force off the boards to begin the season with 10.7 rebounds per game and 7.6 defense rebounds a game, leading the SoCon in both categories. Alex Wilkins leads Furman with 17.7 points per game, with Johnston averaging a double-double with 10.3 points and ten points a game from Asa Thomas.
