UNI wrestling lands 14 on Academic All-Big 12 Team

IRVING, Tex. --- A total of 14 members of the UNI wrestling team picked up First Team Academic All-Big 12 honors on Tuesday as the conference office announced its slate of academic honorees during the 2023-24 winter sports season.

First team selections consist of student-athletes who have maintained a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.20 or better during the season, while second team honorees have posted a cumulative GPA between 3.00 and 3.19.

In addition to maintaining a steady GPA, student-athletes must also have competed in at least 20% of their team's total competitions on the season. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Seniors who participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percentage of participation are also eligible.

UNI's 14 first team selections were second-most among Big 12 wrestling programs this past season, second only to South Dakota State's 15 first teamers, and were the third-most total selections among conference opponents, trailing only South Dakota State (18) and Air Force (17). This year also marked the fifth consecutive season the Panthers have had at least 11 total Academic All-Big 12 selections.

Since joining the Big 12 Conference in 2017-18 as an affiliate member, Northern Iowa has accumulated 91 total Academic All-Big 12 selections, including 77 first team picks. UNI's 14 first team selections this year are the third-most in a single season in that span.

Among the group of Panthers honored, two were nominated for Big 12 academic recognition with a 4.00 GPA, including Trever Anderson and Connor Thorpe.
