Panther wrestlers capture three titles at U20 World Team Trials and U23 Nationals

Land, Voelker, Gunderson punch tickets to World Championships with championship finishes.
GENEVA, Ohio --- Members of the UNI wrestling team representing the Panther Wrestling Club put their skills on display during an impressive weekend of competition on the mats with three championships won at USA Wrestling's U20 World Team Trials and U23 National Championships in northeast Ohio.
Participating in both freestyle and Greco-Roman style competitions, Panther athletes secured three spots on the United States teams scheduled to compete at the upcoming United World Wrestling (UWW) Championships in the coming months.
In the U20 Greco-Roman competition, Cory Land made quick work of Elijah Cortez in consecutive matches to capture the 60-kilogram title and secure his ticket at the UWW U20 World Championships in Spain this September. Nick Fox also competed in the 82-kilogram Greco-Roman bracket, dropping consecutive matches to Arian Khroravy (California) to finish in second-place.
Wyatt Voelker went a perfect 5-0 in the U23 Greco-Roman field, including a victory by superiority against Michael Altomer (NYAC) in the finals to earn his second straight World Championship berth. Voelker qualified for the Greco-Roman World Championships last year as a U20 competitor, and will represent the U.S. at the UWW U23 World Championships in Albania this October.
In U23 freestyle action, seven Panthers finished the weekend on the podium, led by John Gunderson, who captured the 86-kilogram title with an 8-0 tournament record. Gunderson will join Voelker at the UWW U23 World Championships this fall.
Voelker, also competing in freestyle competition, placed second at 92 kilograms, while Cael Happel (65 kilograms) and Ryder Downey (74 kilograms) both placed third in their respective weight classes. Jack Thomsen (74 kilograms) and Kalob Runyon (97 kilograms) both finished in fourth-place, with Trever Anderson (57 kilograms) placing fifth and Adam Ahrendsen (97 kilograms) earning sixth place.
