CEDAR FALLS --- UNI women's basketball takes on its final non-conference matchup of the season when the Panthers take on the Iowa Hawkeyes inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday, December 20. The last time these teams met was inside the McLeod Center on November 12, 2023. The Hawkeyes came out victorious in a 94-53 contest.
UNI is coming off a 53-68 loss to RV South Dakota State on Saturday. In that matchup, Maya McDermott and Kayba Laube led UNI scoring with 12 points each. They were the lone Panthers in double figures against South Dakota State. Katy Reyerson led the Panther rebounding effort with eight.
Maya McDermott continued her streak of double-digit scoring matchups with 12 points against SDSU. McDermott has recorded double-figure points in all 10 matchups this season. UNI continued an active program-record 542-game three-pointer streak that started December 6, 2008, versus Green Bay (6-of-19) following an 0-of-14 outing from behind the three-point arc December 3, 2008, against Northern Illinois. The Panthers knocked down one three against South Dakota State to continue the streak.
UNI checks in at no. 72 in the NET Rankings. The Panthers' rank is third in the Valley behind Belmont (45) and Murray State (56). Drake is number four at 104. Iowa will be UNI's second straight Quad 1 opponent as the Hawkeyes are the Panthers' highest-ranked opponent on the schedule with a NET of 32.Â
Kayba Laube is eyeing the 1,000-point club as she sits with 851 points, just 149 short of being UNI's 31st member and fourth member in the last two seasons after Grace Boffeli, Mama McDermott, and Emerson Green joined last season.
As of December 16, the Panther team currently leads the Valley in a number of statistical categories including three-point percentage (39.5), turnover margin (3.50), and turnovers per game (14.1). UNI's 39.5% three-point percentage ranks 10th in the nation. Individually, multiple Panther athletes are among the tops in the Valley. Maya McDermott leads the MVC in assist/turnover ratio (2.58), field goal attempts (166), field goals (80), points (219), and points per game (21.9). McDermott's 21.9 points per game is ranked ninth in the nation. McDermott is second in the conference in assists (51) and free-throw percentage (91.7) while sitting third in assists per game (4.9), three-point percentage (46.4), threes (26), and threes per game (2.6). Kayba Laube leads the MVC from beyond the arc including three-point attempts (69), three-point percentage (52.2), three-pointers (36), and threes per game (3.6). Laube's 3.6 threes per game are ranked fourth in the nation while her 52.2% from three-point range is fifth and her 36 threes is sixth. Ryley Goebel leads the Valley in steals (28) and steals per game (2.8) and is second in the conference in blocks (25) and blocks per game (2.5). Goebel is 11th in the nation with 2.5 blocks per game and 14th in the nation with 25 blocks.
