
Panthers hit the road for South Dakota State

CEDAR FALLS --- UNI women's basketball heads to South Dakota State for the first of two road non-conference matchups to close out the non-conference portion of the 2024-25 season. The Panthers and Jackrabbits have met on 17 previous occasions with SDSU holding a 12-5 lead in the all-time series. The Jackrabbits took home a 78-59 victory inside the McLeod Center last season in the last meeting between these two programs.
UNI is coming off a 78-59 victory over South Dakota on Tuesday inside the McLeod Center. In that matchup, Maya McDermott led Panther scorers with 14 points. She added five assists and three rebounds to her total. Elise Jaeger and Shateah Wetering were the other Panthers in double-figures with 11 and 10 points respectively. Jaeger finished with 12 rebounds. UNI improved to 5-4 on the season with the victory. The Panthers have won the last six matchups with the Coyotes inside the McLeod Center. The Panthers held the Coyotes to nine points in the third quarter. That was the third time UNI had held a team to single digits in a quarter this season.
Kayba Laube became the 11th Panther to play in more that 130 games in a career as she made her 131st appearance against South Dakota and her 35th career start. Elise Jaeger recorded the first double-double of her career. She finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds, both a career high. Bri Robinson made her first career three-pointer in the second quarter against The Coyotes. Katy Reyerson set a career-high with eight points against South Dakota.
UNI continued an active program-record 541-game three-pointer streak that started December 6, 2008, versus Green Bay (6-of-19) following an 0-of-14 outing from behind the three-point arc December 3, 2008, against Northern Illinois. The Panthers knocked down nine threes against South Dakota to continue the streak.
UNI checks in at no. 65 in the NET Rankings. The Panthers' ranking is third in the Valley behind Murray State (47) and Belmont (51). Drake is number four at 106. South Dakota State will be UNI's first Quad 1 matchup with the Jackrabbits ranked no. 43 in the latest NET Rankings as of December 12.
As of December 12, the Panther team currently leads the Valley in a number of statistical categories including three-point attempts percentage (42%), turnover margin (4), and turnovers per game (14.1). UNI's 42% three-point percentage ranks second in the nation. The Panthers are 17th in the nation with 9.6 threes per game which is the third-best mark in the Valley. Individually, multiple Panther athletes are among the tops in the Valley. Maya McDermott leads the MVC in field goal attempts (150), field goals (75), points (207), and points per game (23). McDermott's 23 points per game is sixth in the nation. McDermott is second in the conference in assist/turnover ratio (2.82), assists (48), three-point percentage (50), three-pointers (26), and threes per game (2.89). Her 50% from beyond the arc is ninth in the nation. Kayba Laube leads the MVC from beyond the arc including three-point attempts (63), three-point percentage (55.6), three-pointers (35), and threes per game (3.89). Laube's 3.89 threes per game are ranked second in the nation while her 55.6% from three-point range is third and her 35 threes is fourth. Ryley Goebel leads the Valley in steals (26) and steals per game (2.89) and is second in the conference in blocks (23) and blocks per game (2.56). Goebel is 10th in the nation with 2.5 blocks per game and 11th in the nation with 23 blocks.
