
Laube sets new Panther record in victory over Pittsburgh

UNI women’s basketball sees a new single-game record in a 90-74 rout of Pittsburgh.
ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands — UNI women's basketball wrapped up the Paradise Jam Island Tournament with the program's first all-time matchup against Pittsburgh. The Panthers were deadly from three-point range, hitting 16 threes against Pitt including a program-record 10 three-pointers from Kayba Laube.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pittsburgh Panthers got off to a 7-2 start to open the final day of the Paradise Jam Island Tournament. Back-to-back three-pointers from Kayba Laube cut into the Pitt lead before both teams traded baskets heading into the first-quarter media timeout with a score of 14-11 in favor of Pitt. Seven points from Laube including a buzzer-beating three-pointer closed the first quarter with UNI trailing five points at 21-26.
Out of the break, Northern Iowa went on an eight-point run including the first five coming from freshman Elise Jaeger to take an early three-point lead at 29-26. A five-point run gave Pitt the lead back at 31-29, but that was short-lived before an 11-point run from UNI, including six points from Kayba Laube, gave the Panthers a nine-point lead at 40-31. Northern Iowa closed the second quarter on a 14-10 run to hold a 54-41 lead heading into halftime after back-to-back layups from Ryley Goebel ended the frame.
Elise Jaeger opened the second half with a layup. Pitt recorded seven points to UNI's five heading into the pair of third-quarter media timeouts to cut into the UNI lead with a score of 61-48 in favor of Northern Iowa. A 10-2 run for UNI out of the media timeout gave the Panthers a 21-point lead at 71-50. Pitt ended the third quarter on a 7-3 run to cut the UNI lead to 17 points at 74-57.
Ryley Goebel was the lone UNI player to score in the first 2:44 of the final frame before the fourth-quarter media timeout while Pitt netted back-to-back threes to cut the Northern Iowa lead to 15 points at 78-63. Pitt went on a seven-point run to bring the game back within reach at a UNI, 10-point lead before a nine-point run from Northern Iowa sealed the deal and gave the Cats a 90-74 victory.
Kayba Laube led UNI with 34 points. She was 10-for-15 from beyond the arc and only shot three-pointers. Laube added seven rebounds to her total. Maya McDermott was the other lone Panther in double-figures with 21 points. She added seven assists to her total.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
- UNI improves to 4-3 on the season and 1-0 all-time against Pittsburgh with the 90-74 victory.
- Kayba Laube set a new UNI single-game record with 10 three-pointers against Pitt. She passed Brittni Donaldson's record of eight set at Drake in 2014. Laube also set new career highs with 10 threes and 34 points.
- Laube became only the fifth player in MVC history to hit 10 or more threes in a single game.
- Maya McDermott continued her streak of double-digit performances with 21 points against Pitt. She has now scored in double figures in each game this season.
