Panther women’s basketball edged out by Bluejays

UNI women’s basketball battled to the final whistle in a 75-71 loss to RV Creighton.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — UNI women's basketball hosted the Creighton Bluejays inside the McLeod Center Saturday afternoon. A high-energy and intensity matchup came down to the wire where Creighton came out on the winning side by a score of 75-71.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers and the Bluejays battled back and forth through the first six minutes heading into the first-quarter media timeout with Creighton up four at 14-10. The Panthers put up nine points down the back half of the first quarter including a three-pointer from Shateah Wetering and a layup from Kaylee Corbin with five seconds left in the frame to tie things at 19 heading into the second quarter.
A three-pointer from Maya McDermott opened the second quarter before a 10-3 run from the Bluejays gave Creighton a 29-25 lead at the second-quarter media timeout. UNI scored six quick points out of the media timeout before four Bluejay points ended the first half with Creighton up two points at 33-31.
A five-point run from the Bluejays opened the second half before Ryley Goebel and Maya McDermott knocked down back-to-back shots. The third-quarter media timeout saw a 44-44 score after back-and-forth buckets from both teams. A five-point run from the Panthers out of the break was met by a seven-point run from Creighton to give the Bluejays a two-point lead. The matchup saw a 54-53 lead for the Panthers heading into the final frame.
The fourth quarter saw both teams benefit from nine-point runs where the Panthers' was scored solely by Maya McDermott. The Panthers worked to play the foul game down the stretch but were defeated by a 75-71 final score. Maya McDermott led the Panthers with 23 points. She added three rebounds and two steals to her total. Taryn Wharton and Kayba Laube were the other two Panthers in double-figures with 11 and 10 respectively.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
- UNI drops to 4-4 on the season with the 75-71 loss to Creighton. The Panthers fell to 20-43 all-time against the Bluejays.
- Maya McDermott recorded her sixth 20+point game of the season with 23 against Creighton.
- Bri Robinson recorded a career-high four assists.
