UNI wrestling rolls to five titles at Pat Flanagan Open

DUBUQUE, Iowa --- UNI wrestling claimed five individual titles on Saturday competing at Loras College's Pat Flanagan Open. In an impressive exhibition that featured 34 total victories, the Panthers picked up eight pins.
After earning two bonus-point victories, Bowney Downey shares first-place honors with teammate Garet Rinken at 125 pounds. Brandon Paez fought hard on the back side to secure fifth place at 125 pounds after dropping his third match of the day.Â
Connor Thorpe was crowned the 141-pound champion after picking up two falls in under three minutes, securing his first Pat Flanagan Open title of his career.
Jack Thomsen dominated the competition at 165 pounds, earning first-place following a neck-and-neck final match up against Iowa's Drake Rhodes. Izzy Moreno battled back to earn third place at 165 pounds with two major decision victories and a pin in one minute and twenty nine seconds.Â
Gaining another individual title for the Panthers, Nick Fox earned two pins at 174 pounds and scored a 7-2 major decision win over Iowa's Will Carano to finish in first-place. Adam Ahrendsen pulled off pins in his first and final match of the day, including a 37 second fall over Michael Tal-Shahar (Unattached Wisconsin) to take third-place.

UP NEXT
The Panthers return home next Sunday, Feb. 4 to host No. 20 West Virginia inside the McLeod Center. Competition is slated to begin at 2 p.m. CT with live coverage available on FloWrestling and CFU Channel 15. UNI will also be celebrating Military Appreciation Day with complimentary tickets to all military members who present their military IDs at the box office.
