CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Coming off a strong start to the season two weeks ago, UNI cross country returns to the course late Friday afternoon as the Panthers head to Normal, Illinois for the Redbird Invite, hosted by Illinois State University.
The women's six-kilometer race is slated to begin at 5 p.m. CT, followed by the men's eight-kilometer race at 5:45 p.m CT at the D.A. Weibring Golf Club.
At Iowa State's Cyclone Preview two weeks ago, UNI saw two breakout performances in the women's five-kilometer race with junior Emma Hoins recording the fourth-fastest time in program history in 17:30 to finish in 15th place. Kate Crawford meanwhile placed 18th in 17:30, tying the tenth-best time in UNI history, alongside Ashley Norem. Ella Popenhagen finished in 21st place with a time of 17:50, while freshman Eden Mueller finished close behind with a time of 17:52 placing 22nd for the Panthers.
On the men's side, freshman Chase Lauman made an early impression in his collegiate debut in the six-kilometer race, finishing seventh overall with a time of 18:31. Caleb Shumaker clocked a time of 18:39, crossing the finish line in 11th place, as Tyler Colvin (19:05) finished in 15th place. Brady Griebel took home 19th in a time of 19:22, while Carson Owens (19:24) finished in 20th place on the course.
The Panthers placed fourth out of nine teams at last year's Redbird Invite on the women's side, while the men took fifth place.
