CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- UNI's Wyatt Voelker looks to capture his fourth major Greco-Roman title of the summer as he takes to the mat at the United World Wrestling (UWW) U20 World Championships beginning Friday in Amman, Jordan.
Voelker, a Manchester, Iowa native entering his second year with the Panthers, has posted a 10-0 record in Greco-Roman competition at 87-kilograms in three major competitions this year. He opened with a U.S. Open title back in May in Las Vegas, going 4-0 in the process, before clinching a spot for the World Championships after winning the U.S. World Team Trials championship in Geneva, Ohio in June. In his most recent appearance with the U.S. U20 national team, Voelker took gold at the Pan American Championships in Santiago, Chile, posting another 4-0 performance.
This year's 87-kilogram field at the U20 World Championships includes 29 wrestlers. Qualifying round bouts will begin at 2 a.m. CT, with the semifinals beginning later in the day at 9 a.m. CT. Wrestlebacks will be held on Saturday at 4:30 a.m. CT, with the finals set for 10:30 a.m. CT on Saturday.
Voelker posted a 14-4 record during his first collegiate season with UNI, clinching tournament titles at Grand View, Iowa State and UNI, as well as a title as an unattached wrestler at the Soldier Salute. Rattling off a 13-match win streak to begin his UNI career, he made his collegiate debut against No. 19 Luke Surber (Oklahoma State), finishing the year with two pins and three wins by major decision.
