ST LOUIS --Â To close out the regular season, two Panthers have picked up weekly awards from the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) staff.
For the sixth time this year, redshirt junior Samantha Heyer has been named the MVC Pitcher of the Week. Along with Heyer's honor, another member of UNI's pitching staff was recognized by the conference office. Redshirt freshman Anna Wischnowski has been named the final MVC Newcomer of the Week for her three appearances in the circle for the Panthers.
Heyer capped off the final weekend of her second full season in the circle for the Panthers with a major accomplishment not seen by the program in almost a decade. Heyer threw UNI's first perfect game in nine years against Evansville on Friday. Heyer is one of only two pitchers in the Valley to have a perfect game this season, along with Hannah James of Murray State. On Friday afternoon against the Aces, Heyer took down all 15 batters she faced, including 10 separate strikeouts.
Heyer pitched only 63 pitches in her only MVC appearance of the week, picking up her 22nd win and her fourth individual shutout of the season. She also started the Panthers midweek game against the Iowa Hawkeyes, where she put in two innings of work with three strikeouts. In two games this week, Heyer allowed only two hits with no earned runs while throwing 13 strikeouts for a 0.00 ERA during seven innings in the circle.Â
Wischnowski capped off her first season in the circle for the Panthers with two wins in three separate appearances. Wischnowski started her first game for UNI since March on Saturday against the Evansville Aces. In 4.2 innings of work, Wischnowski struck out six batters while only allowing one walk and three hits for no runs in her third win of the season.
But Wischnowski's biggest game of the week came against the in-state rival Hawkeyes. The redshirt freshman picked up only her second win of the year by taking over for Heyer in the third inning of the game. While in the circle on the road, Wischnowski was unphased while keeping the Hawkeyes at bay. In 24 pitches against nine batters, the Trevor Wisconsin native allowed a hit per inning, no earned runs, no walks, and one strikeout, giving the UNI offense the chance to win the game in the bottom of the fourth.
In seven innings of work in the circle, Wischnowski had a 0.00 ERA, five hits, one run, and two walks allowed with seven strikeouts and a 2-0 record.Â
