INDIANAPOLIS --- Nine UNI teams registered perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores during the 2021-22 academic year as the NCAA publicly released its latest collection of APR data. The data collected is used to provide an analytical picture of an institution's academic success in each sport.
Each year, every NCAA Division I team calculates its APR score using a formula with points awarded for scholarship student-athletes on a basis of remaining eligibility and electing to stay in school or graduating. Schools that do not offer scholarships calculate their scores based on recruited student-athletes. The 2021-22 academic year marks the second year that the NCAA has publicly released APR scores following a one-year hiatus in 2019-20 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
UNI's men's and women's cross country and golf teams, along with wrestling, softball, swimming and diving, tennis and women's track and field each posted scores of 1,000. The nine perfect scoring programs are among six other Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) institutions to have at least nine programs score 1,000 this year.
"We continue to be proud of the academic successes of all our teams," said Andrea Greve-Coello, Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development & Inclusion. "These APR scores reflect not only the hard work of our student-athletes, but the overall commitment from our coaches to prioritize academics."
In comparison to the 2020-21 academic year, UNI saw five teams (men's cross country, men's golf, women's golf, softball, tennis) post a perfect annual score of 1,000 for a second straight year. Additionally, 12 programs either maintained their previous score from a year earlier or improved.
The NCAA also tracks a running multi-year APR score, which helps play a key role in determining a team's postseason eligibility. The most recent APR multi-year rate scores are based on data spanning from the 2018–19 through 2021-22 academic years.
All of UNI's athletic teams also posted a multi-year score over 950 in the latest reports, including ten Panther programs recording a score of 980 or higher. During the previous four-year span, UNI has seen three programs (men's cross country, women's golf, tennis) post a perfect multi-year score, tied for fifth most in the Missouri Valley Conference.
