UNI women's basketball vs. UIC
UNI makes its way up to the Windy City for its second showdown with the UIC Flames this season. In their first meeting of the year, the Panthers extinguished UIC at the McLeod Center in a 79-44 win. It was UNI's fourth straight win over the Flames, dating back to 2004 when the teams met regularly in the non-conference season. The Panthers will look to return to their winning ways in Chicago in the late matchup on Friday night.Â
THE PANTHERS:
- UNI had a big week with two big wins on Wednesday and Sunday. The Panthers swept Drake for the first time since 2016 on another last-second floater from point guard Maya McDermott. UNI also put up big numbers against Indiana State on Sunday in a dominating win.
- For the second time this season, sophomore point guard Maya McDermott was the hero for the Panthers against the Bulldogs. McDermott hit almost the same shot at the McLeod Center that she hit earlier at the Knapp Center, a quick one-legged floater in the waning seconds of the game. The teardrop bucket got national attention on ESPN's SportsCenter from both commentator Scott Van Pelt and the day's Top 10.
- Junior forward/center Rachael Heittola had her best day in a Panther uniform against Indiana State. The transfer put up a season-high 14 points against the Sycamores and tied her career-high in three-pointers made with 3 treys on the afternoon. Heittola also added five rebounds and one assist in UNI's blowout win over Indiana State.
- The Panthers secured their 15th consecutive year at .500 or better in Missouri Valley Conference action. UNI's current run of 15 seasons in a row is already the league's longest active streak among all women's and men's basketball programs.
THE FLAMES:
- UIC comes into Friday's game with a 5-7 MVC record after splitting its past week of conference action. The Flames picked up their first Valley road win against Valparaiso on Wednesday by a one-basket margin. UIC then stumbled at Missouri State, losing to the Lady Bears by 11.Â
- The Flames have had a tough schedule for the second half of the MVC season. In their past five games, the Flames have played against the programs currently ranked first through third in the MVC.Â
- UIC's Josie Filer is on pace for the career milestone of scoring 1,000 total points in her collegiate career. Leading the Flames in both scoring (12.7 PPG) and rebounds (6.6 RPG) in her lone season with the team, Filer is only 70 points away from the milestone.Â
