Redshirt junior earns first-ever weekly conference award after career-best weekend.
ST. LOUIS --- UNI redshirt-junior thrower Katie Fare has been named the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Female Field Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon. The selection marks Fare's first weekly honor from the conference.
Fare's recognition comes after a standout performance at the SDSU Indoor Classic last weekend where she set a new career-best in the shot put with a toss of 54 feet, 8.75 inches (16.68 meters) to take home first place.Â
Her career mark ranks 2nd best in UNI history, one foot and 8.25 inches behind Rachel Jansen's 2007 school record. Fare also won the shot put earlier this season at the Jimmy Grant Invitational in Iowa City (16.51 meters). Fare currently leads all MVC shot putters by one foot, 10.75 inches in the conference rankings, and 28th overall in the nation.
Other track and field honorees from around the MVC include Teliyah James (Murray State-Track), JaVaughn Moore (Indiana State-Track) and Anthony Barmes (Drake-Field).
Fare is a native of Loves Park, Illinois and a product of Harlem High School. She is the daughter of Bill and Kristal Fare.
Fare and the Panthers return to action on Friday as UNI competes at the Iowa Open in Iowa City. Competition is slated to begin at noon CT at the Iowa Indoor Track Building.
