UNI women's basketball at Valparaiso
It will be an early afternoon tip for UNI at 1 p.m. for their second in-season matchup with the Valparaiso Beacons. The Panthers are looking to win at the ARC for the first time since 2021 after losing a 14-point lead to the Beacons in 2022. In its earlier matchup, UNI trounced Valparaiso 89-58 at the McLeod Center.
THE PANTHERS:
-Â UNI picked up its first win at Credit 1 Union Arena since 2005 on Friday night. It wasn't the Panthers prettiest win but UNI was able to grit out an almost double-digit win over UIC.Â
- The Panther defense had another big game against the Flames. UNI kept UIC scoreless for over 10 minutes on Friday including over eight minutes in the fourth quarter. The Panthers put up double-digit steals on Friday night and kept the Flames under their shooting averages, particularly behind the three-point line at -11.5
- Junior guard Cailyn Morgan set a new career high on Friday night. Morgan made three steals against UIC for one of her best defensive performances. Morgan had previously made two steals on two separate occasions in her career.Â
- Head Coach Tanya Warren is likely to pick up two milestones while at Valparaiso on Sunday afternoon. Warren will coach her 507th game behind the Panther bench, setting a new MVC record for most games coached. The record was previously held by former Southern Illinois Head Coach Cindy Stein. If UNI wins at Valparaiso, Coach Warren will have her 300th career win, all at Cedar Falls.
THE BEACONS:
-Â Valpo comes into Sunday's game near the bottom of the MVC standings. In conference play the Beacons have only picked up two wins against Bradley and an upset victory over Missouri State in January. For the season, Valpo sits at 4-18.
- Sunday's game will be the fifth home game for the Beacons in a six-game span, one of the longest in the Valley this year. While in this long homestretch, Valpo picked up a win over Bradley and a close loss to UIC.Â
- Valparaiso has had most of their success against the Panthers at home. Valpo has split eight all-time matchups with the Panthers at the ARC including their upset win last season, but are just 1-7 away from home.
- The Beacons are having their best rebounding season in five years while under Head Coach Mary Evans. In MVC play, Valpo has been just -4.3 in rebounding margin and has surrendered just 2.4 more offensive rebounds per game than it has tallied as opposed to last season with their rebounding margin was -8.9.Â
