UNI softball drops Saturday games of Doc Halverson Classic

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --Â The Panthers came close to grabbing their first win of the season but ultimately fell short in two contests on Saturday to Omaha and Iowa State.Â
After a close loss to Omaha on Friday afternoon, UNI was looking for revenge in its first game on Saturday. An early run from shortstop Kylee Sanders off a Faith Standerski single to left center had the Panthers up in the bottom of the second inning. UNI's defense held strong in the field for the next three innings allowing only two hits with two strikeouts and seven putouts.
But the Mavericks found just enough offense in the top of the sixth to win the game on a two-run homer. The Panthers would throw out six of the next seven batters but couldn't bring two separate runners home in either the sixth or the seventh. Outfielder Mya Dodge set UNI up for the tying run with a ground-rule double in the bottom of the 7th but two straight outs would end the game. The Panthers dropped their second straight game to Omaha in the 2-1 loss.Â
UNI had its best offensive game of the weekend against Iowa State on Saturday night. The Panthers put up seven hits in the 6-4 loss to the Cyclones with two players getting their first runs of the season. Iowa State scored first on a two-run homer in the top of the second. But UNI quickly answered in the bottom bringing second baseman Taylor Hogan home on an Addison McElrath single to center field that cut ISU's lead in half.Â
The Panthers tied the game up in the third as freshman catcher Alexis Pupillo hit her first collegiate homer out to right field. Yet UNI's offense dried up over the next three innings as the Cyclones jumped out to a three-run lead in the top of the fifth. Iowa State scored three runs in two at-bats that inning with a bases-loaded walk and a double to right field.Â
But the Panthers wouldn't be done yet as they started to put together a small rally in the final two innings. UNI broke its hitting dry spell with a Daryn Lamprecht ground-rule double to lead off the sixth inning. The Panthers wouldn't score in the sixth but kept their hopes alive in the seventh.Â
Standerski started the rally with a single down the right field line which was followed up by McElrath reaching base on a Cyclone error. UNI would load the bases two at-bats later as outfielder Madison Parks patiently waited for a walk. Pupillo came through for the Panthers again with a single into right-center that brought both Standerski and pinch-runner Maggie Erpelding home. But with two outs on the board, a swinging strikeout ended the rally for UNI as they fell to Iowa State 6-4.
