CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — UNI tennis resumes competition this weekend as the Panthers hit the road for a pair of non-conference duals in the upper Midwest. The Panthers will visit the North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Friday afternoon for a 12 p.m. CT dual, before heading to Mankato, Minnesota to battle the Mavericks of Minnesota State at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday.
UNI, who was picked 9th in the Missouri Valley Conference's (MVC) preseason poll, went 0-2-1 in its first three duals of the year during the fall season, all contested in Omaha, Nebraska. After tying Omaha 3-3, the Panthers fell to Missouri State and Creighton 4-3 and 6-1 respectively.Â
North Dakota is 1-1 through its first two duals of the season, with a 4-3 victory last weekend against Bellarmine, and a 5-2 loss at Lipscomb. Minnesota State, an NCAA Division II program, will open its season with the Panthers on Saturday afternoon, looking to build off a 16-10 dual record last season.
Andrijana Brkic leads UNI with a 15-2 record in singles competition this year, including 13 wins in tournament format. Brkic opened the season on a strong note by winning the Flight B singles title at the Drake Invite back in September, and took 3rd in Flight 2 play at the MVC Individual Tournament in October. Darta Dalecka sits at 5-7 in singles with a 1-2 mark in dual competition, while Lorena Cardoso enters the spring portion of the season after a 5th place finish in Flight 3 singles at the MVC Individual Tournament.
In doubles, the pairing of Dalecka and Lorena Cardoso has posted 5 wins this year, while Brkic and Thaissa Moreira have split their 8 doubles contests this season. Issa Sullivan and Lasya Mylavarapu have also gone 4-4 in doubles play.
