UNI football looking for first MVFC win at Western Illinois

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - UNI football hits the road for its second Missouri Valley Football Conference game of the year when it faces Western Illinois at 3 p.m. Sept. 24.Â
The Panthers lead the series with the Leathernecks, 34-16. The Panthers won the last contest 41-3 in 2021 when UNI hosted WIU.Â
It will be the league opener for Western Illinois, and both teams are looking for their first win of the season. Farley is 14-6 against the Leathernecks, which are led by Myers Hendrickson, who is in his first year at WIU.Â
Quarterback Theo Day and UNI's passing offense is among the league's best at No. 2 in the MVFC and ranked No. 13 in the nation.Â
Day is second in the conference for passing touchdowns, passing yards, passing yards per game and passing efficiency. He is No. 9 in the nation for passing yards and passing yards per game. Day is averaging 296.7 yards per game.Â
On the receiving end, Deion McShane and Sam Schnee are sitting No. 3 and No. 4 in the league for receiving yards and receiving yards per game. McShane had two 100+ yard games that bolstered his total to 302 yards so far on the season.
Dom Williams is leading the ground attack with 181 rushing yards on the season, which puts him at No. 7 in the conference rankings.Â
Logan Wolf leads the team in receiving touchdowns with two already this year. Williams also has two rushing touchdowns.Â
Spencer Cuvelier is coming off back-to-back games with a sack.Â
UNI has opened the season against one of the strongest running teams in the nation with Air Force and followed it up with teams that rely on their passing game. WIU enters this weekend's game with an average of 310.3 yards of offense per game, compared to UNI's 419 yards. The Leathernecks have averaged 85 yards in rushing to UNI's 122.3 yards. Both teams have kept the penalties to a minimum. UNI is No. 2 in the nation for the fewest penalties per game.Â
