UNI track and field at 2022 West Preliminary Rounds

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – UNI track and field had three throwers on the women's side compete on the second day of the NCAA West Preliminary Round.

Mari Shavers threw a career best toss at the UNI's final, regular-season meet to qualify for her first NCAA Division I West Preliminary Round and land her on the all-time list at UNI with the fourth best throw in program history.

She finished 35th in the field today with a throw of 56.61 meters (185 feet, 8 inches).

Shavers is a junior from Waterloo, Iowa. She transferred to UNI after earning all-America honors as a freshman competing for Hawkeye Community College. She was seventh in the weight throw at the 2020 NJCAA National Indoor Championships.

Katie Fare and Marin Ehler competed in shot put today. Fare is second on the all-time list with throw of 16.14 meters (52-11.5) Ehler's third-place finish at the MVC Championships in the shot put moved her up UNI's all-time list to No. 6.

At the prelims today, Fare finished 36th with a throw of 15.17 meters (49-9.25), and Ehler was 41st with a throw of 14.99 meters (49-2.25).

Athletes with the top 12 times/marks and the best 12 relay teams at both the East and West Preliminary Rounds sites will qualify for the NCAA Championships held June 8-11 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

UP NEXT

Darius King will join Tom Yezek in the discus to open up competition for the men Friday. The duo will compete at 1 p.m. King is in flight 2, and Yezek will be in the final flight, No. 3. Isaiah Trousil and Parker Kiewiet will compete in the quarterfinals of the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, respectively. The quarterfinals will decide the final 12 who advance to the NCAA Championships.

100m (first round): 10. Isaiah Trousil 10.30 – qualified for quarterfinals
200m (first round): 12. Parker Kiewiet 20.58 – qualified for quarterfinals

Long jump: 21. Parker Kiewiet 7.54 meters (24-9)
