UNI softball wins doubleheader against Loyola
4/9/2022 7:06:00 PM | Softball
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- It was an exciting Saturday as UNI softball won their first home doubleheader against the Loyola Ramblers 4-1 and 8-2.
The Panthers hit three home runs and threw 24 strikeouts in two wins over the Ramblers on Saturday afternoon. UNI continued their strong offensive play from Wednesday's game against Iowa State to take over both games against Loyola. Redshirt sophomore pitcher Samantha Heyer had a career day in the circle, throwing 11 strikeouts in relief in the second game of the day.Â
Game 1 | W, 4-1
The Panthers got a quick start to the series as designated player Mya Dodge hit a leadoff home run just to the left of center. UNI would score in the first four innings of the game grabbing a run in each. Second baseman Taylor Hogan would get the second run of the day after Brooke Snider followed up Hogan's double with a single to left field. Right fielder Sammy Moss would hit her first home run of the day in the third inning with a bomb to left for the Panthers to go up by three.Â
UNI's final run of the day would come from pinch-runner Hannah Isley as Snider picked up her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to right field. Starting pitcher Kailyn Packard would throw a complete game, again hitting the 12 strikeout mark in her seven innings of work. Packard came close to having her fifth shutout of the season, but the Ramblers leading Amelia Thomas batter hit a solo home run to center in the seventh to end the no-no bid.Â
The Panthers had six different hitters in the first game with no batter getting more than one hit. Snider would be the only batter with multiple RBIs, bringing two runs home in two at-bats.Â
Game 2 | W, 8-2
It would be a slightly different story for game two as the Ramblers got off to a quick start with a run in the first. But UNI would answer back quickly as Dodge hit a single to center and Moss had her second home run to left field to bring two runs in. The Panthers would score one more run in the third with the bases loaded.Â
Snider would be walked by Loyola's pitcher to bring Kylee Sanders home and advance three other runners. UNI wouldn't be able to do anything else with the bases loaded as the Ramblers grabbed the third out on a fielders choice.Â
Loyola would cut into the Panthers lead in the second with an unearned run on a fielder's choice. It would be a little bit before UNI's offense would again find its rhythm, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third. Sanders would hit a solo home run to right after a lengthy battle with the Ramblers pitcher during the Panthers second at-bat of the inning.Â
Wells would be walked to set up an RBI for Hogan with a double to right-center. Maggie Erpelding would be credited with the run after coming in to pinch run for Wells. First baseman DarynLamprecht would hit UNI's second double of the game to bring Hogan across home plate.Â
The Panthers scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded. Wells hit a double to right-center that brought three runners to home plate. Isley and Parks would score for UNI while Sanders would be caught out at home. From the fifth inning onward it was a pitcher's duel between Heyer and Loyola's Peyton Pepkowski, who pitched in relief for the final three innings. Heyer didn't allow a hit in the final two innings and threw five strikeouts to end the game a half-inning early.
Three Panthers would have multiple hits in the second game of the day as Sanders had three while Wells and Lamprecht had two apiece. Wells and Moss led the team in RBIs with two each while four other batters had a single RBI (Sanders, Hogan, Snider, Lamprecht). Heyer would be credited with the win as she pitched five innings in relief of Erica Oler. Heyer allowed just two hits and no runs in her five innings of work while hitting a career-high in strikeouts with 11.Â
