UNI softball heads to Ames for midweek game with Iowa State

UNI softball vs. Iowa State
After losing to the Cyclones in a tight game during the Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic, the Panthers will look to even the series in Ames on Wednesday. Iowa State is coming off a rough start to Big 12 conference play with three straight losses to Texas over the weekend. In the overall series, the Cyclones hold a slight edge with 46 wins to UNI's 38 and the lone series tie in 1982. The Panthers do hold a slight edge in RPI rankings at 76 to Iowa State's 79.Â
THE PANTHERS:
-Â Despite losing two games to weather over the weekend, the Panthers were able to make the most of their lone game against Missouri State. Catcher Emmy Wells hit a home run in extras to give UNI the walkoff 1-0 win
- UNI has now gone into extra innings in three separate games. Sunday's extra-innings game was the Panthers first win in extras of the season. UNI has a 1-2 record in extras.Â
- With her walkoff blast on Sunday, sophomore catcher Emmy Wells now leads the MVC in home runs with Missouri State catcher Alex Boze. The two catchers have 8 home runs apiece.Â
- For the fourth week this season, the Panthers have had a player named to the MVC's list of weekly honors. This time starting pitcher Kailyn Packard was awarded her second Pitcher of the Week honors in her MVC career. Packard's 8 innings of work on Sunday with a 0.00 ERA, 5 hits allowed, and 12 strikeouts helped lead her to the honor.
THE CYCLONES:
- Iowa State has struggled the past couple of weeks through a six game losing streak. The Cyclones have dropped games to Texas and BYU over the past 12 days including two one-run losses in their Big 12 opening series.
- The Cyclones return home for the first time in the 2022 season on Wednesday. They are one of just seven teams in NCAA Division I softball that have not had a home game yet this season. Iowa State's home softball park Cyclone Sports Complex was built in 2012 and can hold up to 2,000 fans in the stands.
- Of Iowa State's 35 games so far, 11 of those games have been decided by two runs or less. One of those games decided by two runs or less includes their first game against UNI with a 5-4 Cyclone win. In those 11 games, Iowa State is 2-9, including 2-6 in games decided by one run.
- Despite recent struggles the Cyclones had a strong non-conference season through 35 games. Iowa State is in the Top 20 in the nation in doubles per game, triples per game, and walks. Some of Iowa State's success behind the plate can be contributed to lead-off batter Carli Spelhaug who is averaging 1.29 runs per game and 0.34 doubles per game.
