VALPARAISO, Ind. -- UNI softball extended its winning streak to seven games with two afternoon wins against the Valparaiso Beacons on Friday.
The Panthers put up 14 runs through 14 innings in two games versus the Beacons for a 9-1 win and a 5-0 shutout win. UNI continued their home run average of 1.41 bombs per game with four home runs over the afternoon against three different Valparaiso pitchers.Â
Game 1 | W, 9-1
Both teams put a runner on base in the first but would strand them within four batters. The Panthers would find themselves down early as Beacon shortstop JainaWestphal scored the team's only run of the day on a fielder's choice. Starting pitcher Kailyn Packard would throw two straight strikeouts to end Valparaiso's early damage. It would take UNI another inning before they found their offense at Valpo Softball Complex.
Center fielder Madison Parks started the fourth with a bang for the Panthers as she hit her first triple of the season to left field. Left fielder Kamryn Shaffer would quickly follow up with a single to the circle that brought Parks tying run home. And UNI wasn't done yet as shortstop Kylee Sanders slammed her third home run of the season to right-center to give the Panthers a three to nothing lead.Â
UNI would have another three-run inning in the top of the sixth after threatening with the bases loaded in the fifth. A leadoff walk for second baseman Taylor Hogan set up a two-run homer for first baseman Daryn Lamprecht as she flew one out to right-center field. The Panthers would grab their third run of the inning with runners on first and second. Shaffer hit a long single to right-center, allowing right fielder Sammy Moss enough time to get home for run number six.Â
A flyout would end the sixth for UNI but the scoring wouldn't stop there. Designated player Mya Dodge hit home run number 10 in the seventh facing two outs with runners on third and second. Dodge, Hogan, and third baseman Brooke Snider would all come home on the right-center bomb to grab the final score of 9-1.Â
Starting pitcher Kailyn Packard would throw six strikeouts through seven innings of work and allowed a single run. Four Panther batters would have multiple hits as Dodge, Parks, Shaffer, and Sanders all had two hits in the first game of the day. Dodge would also lead the way in RBIs with her three-run homer in the seventh.Â
Game 2 | W, 5-0
Starting pitcher Samantha Heyer pitched her third complete game of the season against Valpo in the second half of the doubleheader. Heyer came two innings shy of throwing the first no-hitter of her career, only allowing three hits in 23 batters faced. While on offense it was all UNI as the Panthers picked up their fifth shutout of the season.
UNI grabbed their first hit of the game in the top of the second as catcher Emmy Wells fired off a double down the right-field line. Wells double was immediately followed up by a home run to right-center by Hogan to give the Panthers an early 2-0 lead. UNI's next two batters would be caught out as the starting pitchers dueled it out in the third inning.Â
The Panther offense would get going again in the top of the fourth as two straight batters singled down the left-field line. Another single to left by pinch hitter Hannah Kelley on two outs would bring home Sanders for the third run of the game. Lamprecht would close out the fourth for UNI with a groundout to short.Â
While the Panthers would be retired in order in the fifth, the team would come back to the plate swinging in the sixth. Sanders would reach first on a fielding error following a leadoff out from Shaffer. After stealing second and a single from Hogan two batters later, Sanders would come in on a single from Snider to short.Â
UNI would add their final insurance run in the top of the seventh as Parks singled to short and Shaffer was walked on the next at-bat.
