ST LOUIS -- For the fourth week in a row, a member of the UNI softball team was recognized for their on-field performance.
Sophomore catcher Emmy Wells has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week as voted on by league coaches and SIDs. In four games last week against Iowa State and Loyola, Wells led the Panthers in multiple categories including batting average, hits, RBIs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, putouts, and fielding percentage.
When it came to the Valley, Wells moved into sole possession of most home runs in the league with 11 on the season. Wells hit three home runs in four games last week with two coming against in-state rival Iowa State in Wednesday's 12-4 run-rule win. Wells is also second in the MVC in slugging percentage this season with an overall percentage of .750. Adding on-base percentage into that number and Wells is second in the Valley with a 1.170 OPS.
Over the past week, Wells averaged .700 at the plate with a .769 on-base percentage. With her three home runs and seven hits in 10 at-bats, Wells had a weekly slugging percentage of 1.800. Her 1.800 slugging percentage on the week is the highest slugging percentage so far for a Panther in the 2022 season. Wells also brought in 11 runs over the week, putting her first on the team in RBIs with 27 on the season.
This is Wells first weekly honor from the Missouri Valley Conference. She has received postseason awards in 2021, being named to the MVC's First Team and the All-Defensive Team. Wells is the second Panther this season named Player of the Week along with redshirt junior Kamryn Shaffer on March 22.
