ST LOUIS -- Two members of the UNI softball team have been honored by the Missouri Valley Conference for their play in the opening weekend of conference action.
Tuesday afternoon the MVC named redshirt-junior Kamryn Shaffer as their softball Player of the Week while freshman Mya Dodge was honored as Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season. Over the weekend the Panthers swept Southern Illinois in a three game series to open MVC play.Â
After a slow offensive start to the season, clean-up batter Kamryn Shaffer broke out in a big way. Shaffer led all Panther batters in their weekend series against reigning MVC tournament champions Southern Illinois with a .556 batting average in nine at-bats. Along with leading UNI in batting average, Shaffer also put up a 1.222 slugging percentage with 2 home runs and 5 hits and a .692 on base percentage. Along with her personal success at the plate, Shaffer also brought home 7 runners over three games with 7 RBIs, the most of any Panther batters.
Standout freshman Mya Dodge continued the stellar start to her first collegiate season against Southern Illinois. Appearing as the designated player in all three games, Dodge put up a .500 batting average with 6 hits, 3 doubles, and 1 home run. She also brought in 3 RBIs with only two strikeouts in 12 turns behind the plate. The freshman from Hiawatha continues to shine in slugging percentage, hitting 1.000 over the weekend and 0.689 on the season, good for 3rd in the Valley. Dodge also excelled as a runner, stealing another base and leading the MVC in stolen bases and stolen bases per game.Â
This is Shaffer's first time being named MVC Player of the Week while it is Dodge's second Newcomer of the Week honor.Â
