CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - UNI Track and Field finishes up the Indoor 2021-22 season by heading to the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Loyola University Chicago.
The men enter this weekend with two indoor and three outdoor team championships consecutively in the last four years. In the pre-championship poll tabbed the Panthers at first place over Indiana State by four points. The women are tabbed to finish fourth above Drake and behind Indiana State by two points. The women are predicted to score 76 points while the Sycamores are predicted to score 78 points, making for a tight championship for the Panthers.
Competition is slated to begin Sunday at 9:30 a.m. with the pentathlon and heptathlon running the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles. At 2 p.m. the Panthers will take the field in the women's weight throw and men's pole vault with running events slated to begin at 2:15 p.m. with the women's 60-meter hurdles preliminary rounds.
Competition will resume 9:30 a.m. Monday with the final heptathlon events followed by the women's shot put, men's triple jump, and women's high jump beginning at 10:30 a.m. At 11:30 a.m. final running events will commence beginning with the women's mile.
For the men, Darius King has held his ground in the shot put placing first in the last three MVC championships. King took first in the shot put last weekend at the Badger's St. Valentines Open with a new personal best throw of 20.30 meters. This toss earned King MVC honors for the second week in a row and moved his previous spot of 12th in the NCAA Division I category to sixth. King improves his lead in the MVC by 1.30 meters. Isaiah Trousil is slated second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.72 seconds and also sits second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.28 seconds. Trousil took first place in the 200-meter dash in 2020 and second in the 60-meter dash in 2020 with a time of 21.49 seconds and 6.78 seconds respectively. In 2021, Trousil barely missed the podium in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.97 seconds finishing fourth in 2021. Carter Morton also leads the MVC in the heptathlon going into this weekend with a point total of 5,350 set at the Jack Jennett Invitational earlier this season.
On the women's side, Paishence Johnson sits fourth in the MVC in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.55 seconds set at the Wartburg Friday Knight Lights Meet earlier this year. Since then Johnson has taken first place in the Iowa State Classic and third in the Husker Invitational. Lydia Berns-Schweingruber leads the conference in the pentathlon with a point total of 3,195 with teammate Sydney Durbin sitting second with a point total of 3,030. In the field with women's shot put is stacked at fifth, sixth, and seventh place with Katie Fare and Morgan Nealey over the 15-meter mark and Marin Ehler on the cusp with her throw of 14.99 meters set last weekend.
