CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --Â With a new calendar year quickly approaching, UNI softball is ready for 2023 with a new schedule.Â
Panther softball has released their full schedule for the 2023 season this week. UNI will spend most of the non-conference portion of the season in Georgia while visiting new Valley opponents and welcoming old foes to Cedar Falls. Throughout the season, the Panthers will face four NCAA Regional teams and several teams that made deep conference tournament runs.Â
UNI kicks off the 2023 season with the annual Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic in Cedar Falls. The Panthers will welcome three familiar teams to the UNI-Dome for the weekend tournament, Iowa State, Drake, and Omaha. Games will begin the afternoon of Friday, Feb. 10, and run until the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 12.
The Panthers then hit the road for the next month and a half to warmer weather locations to continue the non-conference portion of the season. UNI will begin with a stop in Clarksville, Tennessee on Feb. 22 for a rematch with Austin Peay State. Then the Panthers will spend two weeks in Georgia at two separate tournaments, one hosted by Georgia State from Feb. 24 to Feb. 26 and the I-75 Tournament.Â
The I-75 Tournament is a collaboration between Kennesaw State, Georgia Tech, and Georgia State with games played at all three sites. UNI will play all three teams, seeing the Georgia State Panthers for the second time in two weeks. In between the two tournaments, the Panthers will also play a single game against Mercer at Sikes Field on Feb. 28.Â
UNI will then play their final non-conference tournament of the season in Tulsa at the TU/OSU Invitational from March 10 to March 12. While the Panthers won't see the Cowgirls during the tournament, they'll play games against both the Hurricane and Sam Houston State.Â
The Panthers then kick off the Missouri Valley Conference season by visiting newcomers Murray State and UIC on back-to-back weekends in March. UNI won't see other newcomers Belmont or Missouri State in the regular season due to a new scheduling format with the expansion of the conference to 12 teams. Along with a new scheduling format, Valley teams will no longer play doubleheaders on the weekends, instead opting to play a single game on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.Â
The Panthers will have one more game on the road before returning home to Cedar Falls, playing a single game against Missouri in Columbia on March 29. UNI returns home to Robinson-Dresser Sports Complex on March 31 for a three-game series against Bradley. The Panthers also welcome Iowa State to Robinson-Dresser for a single game on April 4 at 4 p.m.
UNI will then alternate weekends on the road and at home against MVC teams with some single games every other week. The Panthers travel to Indiana State before having home games against Drake and Southern Illinois from April 11 to April 16. UNI then gets to play the Bulldogs in Des Moines the following Tuesday before traveling to Normal to play Illinois State from April 21 to April 23.Â
The Panthers have their last single game at home against Drake on Tuesday, April 25 before playing a weekend series against Valparaiso. UNI's first game of May will be on the road in Iowa City playing the Hawkeyes on Wednesday, May 3. The Panthers final series of the regular season will be at home in 2023 where they will welcome the Evansville Aces to Cedar Falls from May 5 to May 7.
UNI will then travel the next week to Carbondale for the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The tournament will start on Wednesday, May 10 with the championship game on Saturday, May 13.Â
