UNI women's basketball vs. No. 7/9 Iowa State
No. 7 Iowa State will travel to Cedar Falls for the first of three in-state games for UNI. The Cyclones are coming off two straight double-digit wins against Southern University and Cleveland State to take on the Panthers. UNI is also 2-0 and hopes to get a home-court advantage against Iowa State after taking them to the wire last season in Ames. Wednesday's game is also a canned food drive for the Northeast Iowa Food Bank. Fans that bring canned food to the McLeod Center will get a ticket voucher for an upcoming game this season.Â
THE PANTHERS:
- UNI kicked off the 2022-23 regular season with two straight wins against St. Thomas and Saint Louis. The last time the Panthers won their first two games of the season was 2019-2020 when they won five in a row to begin the COVID-shortened year.
- The Panthers are ready for a tough week in the McLeod Center. UNI welcomes two AP Top 25 teams to Cedar Falls in the same week for the first time under Head Coach Tanya Warren. UNI will play No. 7 Iowa State on Wednesday evening while taking on No. 20 Creighton on Sunday afternoon. Along with playing two Top 25 teams this week, the Panthers also have four preseason Top 25 AP teams in the non-conference portion of the season for the first time in school history.
- With two wins UNI is currently in a two-way tie for first place in the Missouri Valley Conference. Only Valparaiso has two wins going into the week with victories against Central Michigan and Southern Miss.Â
- Maya McDermott, the Panthers leading point guard, set three career highs on Sunday afternoon against Saint Louis. McDermott set a career-high in points, field goals made and three-pointers made. McDermott had 23 points, eight field goals, and five treys in 26 minutes against the Billikens.
THE CYCLONES:
- Iowa State moved up one spot in the AP Top 25 poll on Monday afternoon. After two straight easy wins for the Cyclones, they moved up to No. 7 in the AP poll with the updated coaches poll coming on Tuesday afternoon.
- Cyclone 5th-year senior Ashely Joens currently leads Iowa State on both offense and defense with two straight double-doubles. Through just two games this season, Joens has 43 points and 25 rebounds along with six assists and three blocks.
- Along with leading Iowa State in stats, Joens was picked to the AP Preseason All-American Team. Other preseason awards for Joens include being named the 2022-23 Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year, a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 Preseason Team, the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List, and the Naismith Trophy Watch List.Â
- The Cyclones were picked to finish first in the Big 12, just one point ahead of Texas as both received four first-place votes. Two other Cyclones were named to the Big 12 preseason team, guard Lexi Donarski and guard Emily Ryan.Â
