UNI women's basketball vs. St. Louis
The St. Louis Billikens come to Iowa for the first time in almost a decade to face UNI on Sunday afternoon. The last time St. Louis played the Panthers in the McLeod Center was on Dec. 7, 2013, where UNI won 74-65. The Panthers have won their past six games against the Billikens with their lone loss coming in 1988.
THE PANTHERS:
- UNI kicked off the 2022-23 regular season with a close win against the St. Thomas Tommies. The Panthers had the Tommies at their heels most of the game. But a big defensive fourth quarter allowed UNI to pull away for a double-digit win.
- The Panthers are in the midst of a four-game homestand to begin the season. This is the longest homestand to open a season since 2007. UNI also had a four-game homestand to start the 2007-08 season with games against Colorado State, Minnesota, Weber State, and Iowa.
- UNI currently leads the MVC in scoring defense after all 12 teams have played one game. The Panthers keeping St. Thomas to 46 points beats out UIC who kept IUPUI to 50 points on Monday. On a national level, UNI is 57th in scoring defense among Division I teams.
- The Panthers opening game win against St. Thomas on Nov. 7, UNI has won their first game of the season for three straight years. UNI has had season-opening wins against St. Louis, North Dakota State, and St. Thomas. Out of the past six opening games, the Panthers have won all but two.
THE BILLIKENS:
- St. Louis is coming off a difficult year in the Atlantic 10 Conference, finishing the 2021-22 season at 9-18 and 5-9 in conference play.
- The Billikens lost their first game of the 2022-23 season to a team very familiar to the Panthers. St. Louis traveled to Terre Haute, Ind. to open the season against the Indiana State Sycamores. The Billikens suffered a narrow 64-62 loss to the Sycamores after Indiana State posted 31 points in the fourth quarter to take the win.
- St. Louis is now being led by Head Coach Rebecca Tillett, who was hired in April of this year. Tillett comes to St. Louis from Longwood University after a four-year stint as the Lancers Head Coach. While with Longwood, Tillett helped the Lancers to a conference championship, the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance, and their first NCAA Tournament victory.
- The Billikens returns seven players from its 2021-22 campaign. Of those returning, fifth-year senior Brooke Flowers will lead the team as the A-10's reigning Defensive Player of the Year. Flowers is the program's all-time leader in blocked shots (265) and is second on the all-time rebounding list (929).
