Swim and Dive on the prowl for the Redbirds

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa Swim and Dive team will return to competition after a 28-day competition break.
The Panthers will travel to Illinois State and compete in a two-day dual against the Redbirds beginning 3:45 p.m. Jan. 14 and resuming at 9:45 a.m. Jan. 15 in the Horton Pool.Â
Illinois State has not competed since Nov. 20 when they placed sixth out of eight teams at the Purdue Invite. The Redbirds were supposed to be back in the pool on Jan. 8 for the Premier Series Midwest Open but that event was canceled.Â
At the Panthers' last competition against Omaha-Nebraska, the team ended with seven first-place finishes, and Taylor Hogan secured a first-place finish on both boards. This meet differed from others in that each race was a relay including an 850 freestyle relay that UNI took the gold in. Casey Summers, Abby McCorkle, Sarah Walpole and Rachelle Houlette raced to first place in the 850 relay where each individual raced a different length.Â
Other standout races included a 900 relay with Walpole, Houlette, and an outstanding swim from Bangs to beat out the Mavericks in just 21 hundredths of a second. Helena Heuberger, Payton Hall, and Amber Finke raced the 3x100 backstroke in just 2:52.55 to grab the first place finish and UNI's 200 freestyle relay team also took first place in 1:38.91 seconds with Clare Christensen, Waren Graeve, Taylor Short, and Faith Larsen in the race.Â
Illinois State will be honoring their seniors before the start of the meet on Friday, Jan. 14. Fans can follow along to the first meet of the New Year on the MeetMobile App. Â
