Panther Volleyball Ends Friday Twin Bill with 3-1 Win

MILWAUKEE – The UNI Panther volleyball team posted a 1-1 record Friday on the opening day of the Marquette Invitational featuring a 3-1 triumph against UTSA that followed a 3-1 loss to Wright State in the Al McGuire Center.
Wright State L, 3-1 (25-19, 16-25, 17-25, 22-25)
In the tournament opener, the Panthers won the first set before the Raiders rallied to take the next three frames for the 3-1 victory. UNI owned advantages of 51-to-44 in kills and 87-to-84 in digs. The 51 terminations and the 87 digs were both season highs. The Panthers also notched nine blocks and four aces.
Emily Holterhaus had a match-high-tying 14 kills to go along with 11 digs in a double-double. Tayler Alden eclipsed 1,000 career assists and led the Panthers with 32 totals assists in her own double-double that included 14 digs. Kira Fallert tallied a team-best two aces and a career-high 16 digs. Kaylee Donner's 26 digs represented the team high and a new personal best. Carly Spies topped UNI with five blocks.
UTSA W, 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 25-19)
The Panthers split the opening sets with the Roadrunners and added back-to-back set victories to secure a 3-1 win. UNI recorded 52 kills and 59 digs and outperformed UTSA in service aces (11-to-4) and blocks (13-to-8). The four-set triumph was the second consecutive match where the Panthers set a new season high in terminations.
Emily Holterhaus led UNI with 13 kills and added 11 digs for her second double-double of the day, and she also paced all servers with a career-high-tying four aces. Tayler Alden collected 27 assists on a .429 assist percentage to highlight the setter position. Defensively, Kaylee Donner had a team-leading 17 digs, and Inga Rotto and Carly Spies each finished with a match-high five rejections.
