Panthers Lose in Straight Sets to Iowa State

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Wednesday evening the Northern Iowa Panther Volleyball team held their first home match of the season against in-state rival Iowa State. The Cyclones won in the match in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-9, and 25-22.
Panthers had a hot start with a 5-0 run to begin the 1st set including a service ace, forcing the Cyclones to take an early timeout. But the Cyclones were able to regroup, taking the next 3 points in the set. The Cyclones were then able to take the lead 7-6 to force a Panthers timeout.
Coming out of the timeout the Panthers went on a 4-0 run to take back the lead. The Cyclones were able to tie it up at 11 capitalizing off some Panther errors. It would be a back and forth set until the Cyclones went on a 6-0 run to go up 24 to 18 before the Panthers would be able to get another point. The Cyclones would take the 1st set 25-20.
The Panthers would get the 1st point of the second set, but it would be a back-and-forth matchup to begin. The Cyclones would be able to go on a 4-0 run to force a Panther timeout, going up 7-4. The Cyclones would begin to pull away midway through the set, scoring 13 points in a row before the Panthers were able to get point 5. The Cyclones would take the second set as well 25-9.
After beginning the 3rd set with some back-and-forth points, the Panthers would go on a 3-0 run to bring the score up to 5-2. The Panthers were able to put up another 3-0 run forcing a Cyclone timeout with the score at 9-4. Out of the timeout the Cyclones were able to use a couple Panther errors to their advantage bringing them within 3 before the Panthers would be able to get another point on the board.
There would be some more back and forth points between the two teams before the Cyclones would bring it within 2 forcing a Panther timeout at 12-10. The Cyclones would tie it up shortly after at 12-12 before pulling away on a 3-0 run to 16-13. The Cyclones would pull away for a 19-15 lead, but the Panthers would bring it within one after going on a 3-0 run.
The Panthers would be able to tie it up late in the set 21-21. The two teams would go back and forth once more until the Cyclones would pull away for the 25-22 win in the 3rd set.
For the match the Panthers hit .064 and had 30 kills, 2 aces, and 23 errors. The Cyclones ended the match with 43 kills, 7 aces, and 14 errors while hitting at .282. Leading the way offensively for the Panthers was Tayler Alden with 6 kills, 1 ace, and hitting .105. Carly Spies also added 6 kills, 7 points and hitting .200.
