UNI Volleyball Defeat North Dakota State 3-1 in Season Opener

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin – The UNI volleyball team opened the season at the GBD Invite, taking on the Bison of North Dakota State. UNI won the first match of the season in 4 sets, winning with set scores of 25-18, 16-25, 25-16, 26-24.
The Panthers matched the season high with 13 service aces in a tightly contested match. UNI finished with 50 kills and a .218 team hitting percentage. UNI setters Jenna Brandt and Tayler Alden finished with 41 assists. Brandt recorded a team high 22 assists with 7 digs while Alden recorded 19 assists, 6 digs, 5 kills and 3 service aces.
Emily Holterhaus led the Panthers in kills with 16 followed by freshman Kira Fallert and Carly Spies, each recording 10 kills. Payton Ahrenstorff led the team with 11 digs followed by Kira Fallert and Jenna Brandt with 7.
Set 1: Tayler Alden opened the match scoring 3 of the matches first 6 points. UNI continued the trend from the spring season, racking up 4 aces in the set. UNI won the opening set of the season 25-18. The Panthers finished the set with 15 kills on 35 attacks and a .200 hitting percentage. The Bison recorded only 7 kills but notched 6 total blocks.
Set 2: The Bison led the set early with UNI trailing by 6 at 15-9. The Panther struggle continued in the second set as the Bison moved ahead 20-11 late and would fall in the set 25-16 to move the match to 1-1. UNI hit .118 with 10 kills and 6 attack errors. The Bison managed 14 kills with only 2 attack errors for a .387 hitting percentage.
Set 3: The Panthers dominated the third set, finishing with a 25-16 set victory. UNI moved ahead early and never looked back leading by as many as 8 throughout the set. He Panthers hit .333 with 9 kills on 27 attack attempts.
Set 4: A close back and forth dominated the 4th set. With multiple lead changes it was the Bison with a late lead. The Panthers rallied late to bring the set to 24-23 before a NDSU timeout. The Panthers moved ahead 25-24 from a Payton Ahrenstorff ace and finished the match with a block from Carly Spies and Emily Holterhaus.

The Panthers will be back in action on Saturday for two matches at the Kress Center taking on Ball State and Green Bay.
