Panthers Take on Stony Brook in MVC Quarterfinal

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The No. 7 seeded UNI women's tennis team is slated to take on No. 2 seed Stony Brook at 10 a.m. on Friday at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo. in the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Tennis Tournament.
UNI (2-13 (0-5 MVC)), capped the regular season with a 7-0 setback to Missouri State in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on April 17.
Last Time Against Stony Brook
UNI was scheduled to meet Stony Brook on Mar. 26, 2020 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, before the season was cut short. The Panthers clashed with Stony Brook at the 2018 MVC Tournament in the semifinal round on April 28, 2018. The No. 6 seeded Panthers upset No. 2 seeded Stony Brook, 4-2, sealing their spot in the championship against No. 4 seed Missouri State. In doubles action, UNI won by default on the No. 3 court and Harri Proudfoot/Valentina Caro earned a 6-4 victory on the No. 2 court. With a win by default on the No. 6 singles court, Reghan Lynch and Caro sealed the Panthers' victory with wins on the No. 2 and No. 5 courts, respectively.

Stony Brook went 6-3 (0-0 MVC) this year, kicking off the season with a three-match win streak from Feb. 26 to Mar. 6, notching victories over Sacred Heart, Seton Hall, and Quinnipiac. Rhode Island snapped the Seawolves' streak on Mar. 12 with a 4-3 edge out. The Seawolves also suffered setbacks from Army and St. John's. On Mar. 27, Stony Brook posted a 5-2 victory over UConn and defeated Fordham, 6-1, on April 17, before closing out the regular season with a 7-0 sweep of Binghamton on April 18.
Junior Sasha Bekirova has a 7-2 (0-0 MVC) record on the No. 2 singles court, while fellow junior Loreto Villalba-Rubio is 6-1 (0-0 MVC), primarily from the No. 6 court. In doubles action, both Bekirova/Jamie Wei and senior Nolwenn Cardoso/sophomore Mathilde Sreeves have 5-2 records from the No. 1 and No. 2 courts, respectively.

On Feb. 29, Stony Brook notched a 6-1 victory over Fairfield before the season was cut short.
