UNI Takes on Omaha in Home Opener

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI women's tennis team will clash against Omaha in its home opener on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Black Hawk Tennis Club in Waterloo, Iowa. A limited number of fans will be allowed and are requested to contact the Black Hawk Tennis Club ahead of the weekend's matches.
UNI is 1-1 (0-0 MVC) on the season after opening on the road in Milwaukee, Wis. Edging past Cardinal Stritch, 4-3, on Feb. 12, the Purple and Gold secured the doubles point with a 6-3 win from sophomore Thaissa Moreira/senior Valentina Caro on the No. 2 court and a 6-4 win from senior Madeline Doherty/freshman Issa Sullivan on the No. 3 court. In singles action, Caro defeated Kimmy Tait 6-0, 0-6, 6-4, on the No. 4 court and junior Olivia Fain fought off Aspasia Katsouda Taka, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, on the No. 5 court. Sophomore Emma Carr clinched the match for the Panthers from the No. 1 court after a three-set thriller of her own against Lisa Keller. After dropping the first set 5-7, Carr took the second 6-2. In the third set, she came back from a 2-5 deficit and fought off two match points to defeat Keller, 7-5.
On Feb. 13, UNI took on UW Milwaukee, falling 7-0.
Last Time Against Omaha
UNI faced the Mavericks in Des Monies, Iowa, on Jan. 26 last season, falling 5-2. Kim Zizek and Doherty posted the Panthers' sole points from the No. 3 and No. 4 singles courts, both battling through three-set thrillers.
Scouting Omaha
Omaha is 3-3 (0-0 Summit League). The Mavericks notched wins over Eastern Illinois, Illinois State, and Barton County CC before dropping two contests to Missouri and one to Missouri State.
Senior Natalie Lorentz is 3-3, splitting her time between the No. 2 and No. 3 singles courts and fellow senior Madison Gallegos is 2-3 on the No. 1 court. In doubles action, senior duo Marie Kapelevich/Lorentz lead the Mavericks with a 4-1 record, going 3-0 on the No. 2 court and 1-1 on the No. 1 court. Junior Ines Absisan/Gallegos and freshman duo Brooke Covington/Colby Kelley have 2-1 records from the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles courts, respectively.
Last season the Mavericks went 10-4 (0-0 Summit League), posting a 7-0 sweep of McPherson College. Omaha tallied five 5-2 wins (UNI, Saint Louis, Missouri State, Northern Colorado, and Green Bay) and edged out Chicago State and Northern Illinois, 4-3, each. Omaha's losses came at the hands of Iowa State, Central Arkansas, Creighton, and UIC.
