UNI Women's Basketball vs. Idaho
LAHAINA, Maui - After traveling almost 4,000 miles, the UNI women's basketball is ready to take on two teams in the Maui Jim Maui Classic in Hawaii.
This will be the Panthers' first time playing in the women's version of the Hawaiian tournament in its fifth year. UNI will face the Idaho Vandals and the Oregon State Beavers over the weekend with games on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
THE PANTHERS:
- The Panthers are coming off almost a week of rest after a strong showing against No. 13 Iowa State in Ames. The Panthers took the game down to the last basket, losing by one to the Cyclones, 70-69.Â
- Junior guard Kam Finley had a career game against Iowa State on Sunday night. Finley scored 28 points, a career-high along with making six out of eight three-pointers in the second half. It was also a career-high for Finley in three-point shots made in a game as she moved to 34th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage.
- The Panthers still sit atop the statistical rankings in assist to turnover ratio and turnovers per game following their one-point loss to Iowa State on Sunday. UNI is seventh in the nation in assist to turnover ratio and 10th in turnovers per game.
THE VANDALS:
-This will be only the second time in program history that the Panthers and the Vandals have faced off against one another at the Maui Classic. The two teams met in the Grand Canyon Thanksgiving tournament in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2016. The Panthers won that matchup, 76-74
- The Vandals have struggled in the past on the Hawaiian Islands. In 2016, Idaho fell to Oregon State and UNLV in the first Maui Jim Maui Classic. And in 2018, when Idaho traveled to Honolulu, they fell to The University of Hawaii 69-61.
- The Vandals make 9.5 three-point field goals a game, which is good for 16th in the nation and first in the Big Sky Conference.
- Idaho is led offensively by guard Louise Forsyth's with an average of 14.1 points per game. And junior guard Beyonce Bea leads the team defensively with an average of 7.6 rebounds a game.
THE BEAVERS:Â
- This will be the first game between Oregon State and the Panthers in women's basketball. The only program at UNI that has faced off against Oregon State is the wrestling program.Â
- This is the fifth time that the Beavers are hosting the Maui Classic. The tournament had taken place four consecutive years, before not taking place last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This will be the third event played at the Lahaina Civic Center.
-Â OSU is 7-1 all-time at the Maui Classic, with its lone defeat coming against Texas A&M.
- The Beavers excel on the defensive side of the ball. Four players on OSU are among the top 18 in the Pac-12 conference, including Kennedy Brown, Taya Corosdale, Taylor Jones and Jelena Mitrovic.
