UNI defeats Southern Illinois in four sets

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Setters shined Friday in the McLeod Center as the UNI Panther volleyball team earned a 3-1 win (25-17, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22) against the Southern Illinois Salukis. Tayler Alden notched her second triple-double of the week, and Jenna Brandt posted her 1,000th career assist while recording a double-double.
UNI tallied 62 kills with a .256 attack percentage and a season-high 60 assists during the four-set victory to sweep the season series against Southern Illinois. The Panthers also collected eight service aces, 76 digs, and three blocks within the contest.
Tayler Alden topped all performers with 24 assists and 16 kills and added 14 digs for her fourth collegiate triple-double. Jenna Brandt had 23 assists and 12 digs along with two terminations. Kira Fallert registered her own double-double with 16 digs and 11 kills. Carly Spies and Kaylissa Arndorfer each provided 10 kills, and Payton Ahrenstorff served up a career-high three aces.
Set 1: After eight early ties, the Panthers built a 14-11 lead on a quick spurt that featured a Jenna Brandt kill and aces by Payton Ahrenstorff and Tayler Alden. The Salukis later pulled even, 14-14, but UNI responded with an 11-3 closing run to complete a 25-17 victory.
Set 2: Southern Illinois jumped out to a 4-1 edge and stayed in front until UNI forced a 16-16 tie. The Panthers grabbed their first advantage of the set at 18-17 on a Kira Fallert kill before the Salukis answered and eventually leveled the contest in their 25-22 triumph.
Set 3: A back-and-forth start turned at 15-15 when Tayler Alden's dig secured her latest triple-double and helped to set up Kira Fallert's termination that broke the tie. UNI was in front for good during the remainder of the frame with a kill by Emily Holterhaus finishing the 25-21 win.
Set 4: Jenna Brandt's 1,000th assist came with a Tayler Alden kill for an early 2-1 lead that grew to 3-1 before the Salukis rattled off six points in a row. However, the Panthers bounced back and finally wrapped up the 25-22 victory courtesy of one final Kira Fallert kill.
