Panther women's basketball to have program first matchup with St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minnesota - It will be a program first for the UNI women's basketball team when they travel to St. Paul this Wednesday.
Wednesday night the Panthers will have their first program game against the St. Thomas Tommies. The Tommies recently moved to Division 1 after almost 50 years at the Division 3 level. St. Thomas is a member of the Summit League for most of its sports, including women's basketball. Wednesday night's game tips off at 7 p.m. from Schoenecker Arena.Â
THE PANTHERS:Â
- The Panthers are one of the Top 50 teams in the nation after the first month of play in assist to turnover ratio. UNI ranks 49th out of 348 Division 1 teams with an assist to turnover ratio of 1.09. That puts the Panthers at 2nd in the conference behind only the Bradley Braves.Â
-Â The Panthers had their best second quarter of the season so far this Saturday against the Creighton Bluejays. UNI scored 26 points in the quarter while shooting 56% from the floor, 50% from 3-point range, and 87% from the free throw line.
-Â On Saturday afternoon against Creighton, senior forward Bre Gunnels had the best offensive performance of her college career. Gunnels made a career high 19 points, shooting 7-15 (46.6%) from the floor, 2-5 (40%) from behind the arc, and 3-4 (75%) from the charity stripe.
-Â In the Panther's lone game of the week, senior guard Karli Rucker led the way offensively with 20 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds. Rucker also led the Panthers in minutes on the floor with 38 following a 72-79 loss to the Creighton Bluejays. Rucker was perfect from outside the arc for UNI on Saturday with two 3-point shots falling in the 2nd quarter. She was last 100% from 3-point range against Missouri State on January 15th of 2021.Â
THE TOMMIES:
- In their first season of Division 1 play the Tommies are currently 1-5, getting their lone win of the young season against South Carolina State on November 18th.Â
- St. Thomas is coming off an appearance at the Holiday Beach Classic in California for the Thanksgiving holiday. The Tommies went 0-2 at the tournament dropping decisions to Cal Poly (the event host) and North Texas.Â
- On Saturday, freshman Jo Langbehn posted St. Thomas' first Division I double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.Â
- Tommie's head coach Ruth Sinn is one of only a few Division 1 coaches to have spent 20 seasons as a high school basketball coach.Â
