VALPARAISO, Ind. – Tayler Alden earned her third collegiate triple-double Monday at the Athletics-Recreation Center, but the UNI Panther volleyball team lost, 3-1, to the Valparaiso Beacons. Valpo's victory came with set scores of 25-18, 25-22, 23-25, and 25-16.
UNI finished with a 63-to-62 advantage in digs against Valpo which is the Missouri Valley Conference digs per set leader this season. The Panthers also collected 50 kills while hitting .160 and posted four service aces and five and a half blocks.
Tayler Alden had a team-high 26 assists, 16 digs, and 12 kills, and she was the first Panther to secure a triple-double as early as the third set since Bre Payton within a 3-0 sweep of Wichita State in the 2011 MVC title match. Jenna Brandt posted a double-double with 15 assists and a career-best 14 digs. Emily Holterhaus and Kaylissa Arndorfer each tallied 10 terminations.
Set 1: A kill from Emily Holterhaus opened the match and lifted UNI to a 1-0 start in the ARC. The Panthers also held a 2-1 edge before the Beacons surged ahead out of a 3-3 tie and stayed in front on their way to a 25-18 win.
Set 2: Valpo scored the first five points and would push its lead to 12-4. UNI bounced back from there with a 6-1 run featuring a Payton Ahrenstorff ace and kills by Emily Holterhaus and Carly Spies. The Panthers later climbed within 22-21, but the Beacons escaped with a 25-22 triumph.
Set 3: UNI and Valpo were knotted up several times including 12-12 when Tayler Alden's 10th kill clinched her triple-double. The last tie came at 23-23, and a Kaylissa Arndorfer kill and an Emily Holterhaus service ace kept UNI's hopes alive in a match-extending 25-23 Panther victory.
Set 4: The Panthers grabbed a quick 5-2 advantage prior to a tightly-contested back-and-forth stretch between UNI and Valpo. With a level score of 15-15, the Beacons responded by finishing the contest on a 10-1 outburst to pick up a 25-16 win.
