CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The National Wrestling Coaches Association named Taylor Lujan and Bryce Steiert First-Team All-Americans and Michael Blockhus, Max Thomsen and Carter Isley Honorable Mention All-Americans, Friday.
The NWCA recognizes the outstanding work of the DI Student-Athletes by naming the All-Americans based on their achievements in the NCAA National Championship. This year, due to the cancelation of the championship because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the association awarded All-American honors based on each wrestler's overall body of work through the conference tournaments.
Lujan finished the season on a 19-bout win streak and was named the top seed in the NCAA Championship. He had a 23-2 record, including a Big 12 Championship, a Midlands title and a 12-0 record in dual bouts. He also tallied six major decisions, a tech fall and nine pins. He was ranked first by all but one of the major publications. He closed his career with 111 wins and three conference titles.
Steiert finished with a 27-3 mark and was the fifth seed in the NCAA Championship after capturing his first Big 12 title. He had two pins and a major decision win in the Big 12 Championship, including the only fall in the title round. His team point total of 24 points was the most of any wrestler in the field in Tulsa. His three losses on the year are all against top-11 opponents and they were by a total of four points, including a sudden victory loss. This is his second All-American honor after finishing eighth at the championship a season ago.
Blockhus was the No. 13 seed at the NCAA Championship after finishing his redshirt freshman season with a 22-10 record. He finished fifth in a tough field at the Big 12 Championship. He also went 9-3 in duals with wins over Oklahoma State's Dusty Hone and Wisconsin's Tristan Moran, the No. 14 and No. 9 seeds in the championship respectively.
Max Thomsen is a four-year qualifier and was an All-American in 2017. He was 20-8 on the year and finished sixth at the Big 12 Championship after going down with an injury. He received an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship and the No. 13 seed in the field. He closed his career with 1-3 wins, including 44 bonus-point victories.
Junior Carter Isley was 20-10 on the season and finished fourth at the Big 12 Championship. He was seeded 14th in his first NCAA Championship. His only losses came against wrestlers in the top 13 in the NCAA field. He was 7-3 in duals on the season.
