Panthers Win on Final Day of Northern Colorado Tournament

Greeley, Colo. -- Extra base hits spark the Panthers to a 4-1 win over the Utah Valley Wolverines Sunday.

Freshman Samantha Heyer (4-5) started in the circle and picked up the win for UNI (7-14). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on six hits, allowing three walks and striking out two.

Senior Adara Opiola's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-4 day, and included a double, a home run and two RBIs. Senior Sammey Bunch put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-2 with a home run, two walks and an RBI. Senior Ashley Chesser also chipped in for the Panthers, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double.

The Panthers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the third inning. Bunch put UNI on the board with a two-out solo home run off senior Devyn Cretz.

The Wolverines failed to push any runs across before the Panthers built on their lead in the fifth inning. UNI scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run homer from Opiola, which brought the Panthers lead to 4-0. Utah Valley put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but UNI still held on for the 4-1 win.

GAME NOTES
» The Panthers power output was led by Opiola, who picked up two extra base hits in the ballgame.
» UNI's highest scoring inning was the fifth, when it pushed three runs across.
» The Panthers out-hit the Wolverines at a 7-6 clip.
» UNI pitchers limited Utah Valley to just 1-for-8 (.125) with runners in scoring position.
» UNI pitchers faced 30 Utah Valley hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and 10 fly balls while striking out two.
» Opiola led the Panthers at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBIs.
» Utah Valley was led offensively by sophomore Abby Doughty, who went 2-for-2 with a double.
» Sophomore Brooke Carter led the Wolverines pitching staff, throwing 1.2 shutout innings.
