St. LOUIS - ESPN has selected the Southern Illinois at Northern Iowa men's basketball game for distribution on ESPNU on Sunday, Feb. 23. The game will air at 1 p.m. Central. This marks the third time the Panthers will play on ESPNU this season.
Southern Illinois enters this week tied for second in the league standings (the Salukis were picked 10th in the preseason poll.) This season, SIU has been a youth-led team, with more than half of the team's scoring coming from freshmen and sophomores. But recently, SIU's seniors have stepped up. In SIU's win against Loyola, SIU's three available seniors combined for 50 of the team's 69 points and grabbed 19 of the team's 30 rebounds. All three available seniors (Barret Benson, Eric McGill and Ronnie Suggs Jr.) were in double figures, led by McGill's 27 points. SIU is 6-0 when both Benson and McGill score in double figures.
UNI enters this week as the league's leader (8-2 in conference play and 19-3 overall). The Panthers and Salukis met in Carbondale on Jan. 22 with the Salukis coming away with a two-point win. This season, UNI is led in scoring by sophomore AJ Green. He's second in the MVC (for all games) with his 19.4 scoring average, but leads the MVC in conference-only games by averaging 22.7 per game. Austin Phyfe has been one of the league's best big men this year, as he is averaging 13.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game in league play while shooting a phenomenal 70.9 percent from the floor.
